Trivia Question❓
Which documentary released in 2020 brought widespread attention to the mental health effects of social media by featuring interviews with former tech insiders?
Answer at the bottom of the newsletter
In today’s digital age, social media plays a significant role in how we connect with others, consume information, and present ourselves to the world. While social media offers many benefits, such as staying connected with friends and family or discovering new ideas, it can also have a negative impact on mental health if not managed properly. Constant exposure to curated highlights of others’ lives, comparison, and the pressure to maintain a perfect online persona can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and stress. Managing your mental health in the digital space is essential to maintaining a healthy balance in both your online and offline worlds.
One of the first steps in managing your mental health on social media is being mindful of your consumption. It’s easy to get caught in a loop of endless scrolling, comparing yourself to others, and feeling as though you’re not measuring up. To break this cycle, try to be intentional about the accounts you follow. Choose to follow content that inspires and uplifts you, rather than content that triggers negative feelings. Unfollow accounts that leave you feeling inadequate or stressed. By curating your feed to include positivity, inspiration, and helpful information, you can create an online environment that supports your mental well-being.
Another important strategy for managing your mental health online is setting boundaries. Social media can be all-consuming, and it’s easy to lose track of time spent on platforms. Setting specific time limits or designated “social media breaks” throughout the day can help prevent burnout and allow you to focus on other important aspects of your life. It’s also important to be mindful of the time of day you engage with social media. Try to avoid checking social media right before bed, as the blue light from screens can interfere with sleep, and the content you consume can affect your ability to unwind. Instead, establish a healthy bedtime routine that doesn’t involve scrolling.
Moreover, it’s crucial to practice self-compassion when using social media. The “highlight reel” effect on social platforms can lead to unhealthy comparisons, but it’s important to remember that people typically post only the best moments of their lives. Social media is often a curated, filtered version of reality, not the full picture. Embrace the idea that your life, in all its imperfections, is enough. Challenge negative self-talk and replace comparisons with gratitude for your unique journey and achievements.
Finally, don’t hesitate to take a break from social media when needed. If you feel overwhelmed, drained, or mentally fatigued from constant online engagement, it’s okay to step away for a while. Taking a break allows you to reset, refocus, and return to social media with a fresh perspective. Whether it’s a few hours, a day, or even longer, a digital detox can help you restore balance and protect your mental health.
Social media is a tool, not a mandate. By practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries, embracing self-compassion, and taking regular breaks, you can create a healthier relationship with social media that supports, rather than undermines, your mental well-being.
